GEOAGIU COMMUNE - HISTORY
Select
The Geoagiu commune is situated at the junction of the lower course of the Geoagiu river with the Mures river, in a depression formed by the last ramification of the Mettalic mountains. Archeologically, the commune is known through the old Dacian settlement Germisara (Germi=hot, sara=spring) that extends as far as the borders of this locality and which became under the Romans Thermae Germisara or Germisara Cum Thermis. The Romans' road, the traces of "the thermes" as well as the statues found out here and dedicated to Aesculap and Hygeea stand proves of the Roman activity within this zone. In 1506 the Geoagiu locality was mentioned as feud of Tara Romaneasca under the Radu the Great voivode and Neagoe Basarab voivode. At present, within the zone of these farms, the Geoagiu-Bai health resort functions, situated at an altitude of 350 m, in an impressively geologically shattered area which explains the forming of the mesothermal springs (aproximatively 30°C). After the first world war 1914-1918, Geoagiu became the base residence over 31 villages. Each of these villages has great memories from the past. Regarding the position in the teritory, the Geoagiu commune has a soften temperature climate because of the water network distribution, making favorable the development of microclimate necessary growing trees and different pretentious species such as almond trees, sweet chesnut trees, etc.  Home page
